She's the Man (2006)

Because the show day of TWELFTH NIGHT is coming, “She is the Man” is the film that I will talk today.  It is a film version of Twelfth Night. (in case someone might want to know why it is related to the show day.)

“She is the Man” is a story about a girl, Viola, who tries to show her talent of playing football which mostly others focus on men only.  She was overlooked because she is a women and it makes she furious.   


In order to prove herself as a good football player as a man, she decides to disguise herself to be Sebastian, her brother, and take his place in a elite boarding school when her decides to ditch for a couple weeks.  





 
 

Everything seems to be ok if she does not fall in love with a roommate, Dike Orsino.  Don’t forget!  Now she is in disguise.  A man tries to show that he loves another man is not something that accepted in, and in this case his roommate scare of her also.  What will happen next, you may have to watch it.

          

 This film is a comedy.  If you want to relax for a hard day, it is ok.  But if you want to see a perfect film, I don’t think it Is worth that much.  It is a girly movie that is not given anything much more than laugh and smile.   

Do not expect to see anything much in the teenage movie.  However, it will be good if you watch this movie before seeing TWELFTH NIGHT this Friday.  You will understand it more because in the play we use old language which is if you are not the mother tongue you may confuse.

4BIA (2008)

Actually, I have planned for reviewing some cartoon animation in my mind, but today is Valentines’ day, the day that everything already looks lovely and full with pretty things.  So, I who live in the world that is far from lovely things and Valentines’ day will protest and do everything against this lovely pink pink moment by talking about HORROR film instead.

Alone

4BIA (SEE PRANG in Thai) is a horror film which is difference from most of this kind of film because this film was included 4 short horror films by 4 directors.  And because there are 4 short stories in the film, I will not tell the plot summary.  It’s already short.  If I tell you, you may not have to watch it again.  That’s why it’s not a good idea for reviewing some plot summary.

However, even though you don’t know about this film at all, I guarantee that it’s worth every minute to watch this film.  In the past, Thai horror film that became well-known in international is SHUTTER. BIA is another one that stimulates the trend of Thai horror film again.  It’s great enough for making another episode for this film, which is awesome as well.

In the Middle

 

 

However, it’s Thai horror film.  It will concern about Buddhism.  The retribution of sins is talked a lot.  Merit and evil deeds and revenge are shown in the creepy ways.  By the way, one of these short films will break your emotion.  You will surprise that horror film can make you both laugh and scream in one story.

Burlesque 2010

            After spending time eating and sleeping without thinking of seeing movies at the theatre, finally I have reached the auspicious time to go there.  And it is so worth for BURLESQUE.

       

Burlesque is the story about a woman, Ali Rose, who left her home town in order to catch her dream.  Going straight to LA to pursue her dream of singing, she finds that it is not easy as she thinks.  She has to find a job, and she still is a waitress again.  However, it changes that Burlesque, a modern stripped bar, is her work place. 

 

  Burlesque becomes to be her dream after seeing the shows there.  Dance, lust and love happen in burlesque.  What happen in burlesque and what is going on with Ali, I think watching it in the theatre will show the whole story the best.  

  This movie surprised me a lot, and it has changed my attitude toward Christina Aguilera.  At first, I think it will be like Britney spear’s movies that always disappoint me.  However, Christina makes me impress with her beautiful voice.  I do not know that it is because I love to see old movies (EX. Grease, dirty dancing, etc.) or not. So, I love this movie that has the scent of old movie in its songs such as “A Guy What Takes His Time”.  It is like I have a change to go to Broadway (the same feeling when I saw CHICAGO).   

 

 

And the another best thing that happen in this movie is that Jack, the handsome man who play as a man of Ali which I dream of him to be my man. I can not take my eyes off him. God, he is so hotttttt. Ok, you have to see yourself.

Changeling 2008

Cold weather makes the day to be doom. Opening TV, Changeling was run. Spending time for watching it near two hours, I decided that Changeling should be one of my favorite movies. And you should see it.

Changeling takes place in Los Angeles, 1928. A single mother returns from work to find her nine-year-old son gone. She calls the LAPD to initiate a search. Five months later, a boy is found in Illinois who fits the description; he says he's her son. To fanfare and photos, the LAPD reunite mother and son, but she insists he's not her boy. The cops dismiss her as either a liar or hysterical.

The boy comes back home.

When she joins a minister in his public criticism of the police, they in turn use government power to silence and intimidate her. Meanwhile, a cop goes to a dilapidated ranch to find a Canadian lad who's without legal status; the youth tells a grisly tale. Something is wrong in the process of the investigation. And you will see that people in the past, especially women, lived in what condition of the society.

This film is so interesting because of its plot which is based on the real murder in the past. The Wineville Chicken coop Murders are associated. It was a series of kidnappers and murders of young boys in Los Angeles and Riverside County, California in 1928 which was received national attention because it exposed corruption in the Los Angeles Police Department. However, this is not only thing that make this film more interesting. This film shows about the mistreatment of women in that time. Women who did not follow the norm or fractious in the MEN world will be treated badly. The film clearly shows that they send women to institution with the reason of insanity.

I used to read some English literatures that the writers used it as a social comment tool. But, it is not clear as I saw in this movie. Also, I have a change to read The Great Gatsby last semester, and it relate to The Jazz age.

So, after seeing Angelina’s dressed in the film, it expose the picture in my mind about life style of women in that time that although they were treated by men unequal, they still live in style.

The Jazz Age

The Jazz Age, the Golden Twenties or the Roaring Twenties, was a movement that took place during the 1920s. Many things had change in this time period, but Women in the Jazz Age seemed to change the most. Women became to take part in work forces after the end of the First World War there were many more possibilities for women in terms of social life and entertainment. Equality and free sexuality were the ideas that very popular during the time.

The young set themselves free especially, the young women. They shocked the older generation with their new hair style (a short bob) and the clothes that they wore were often much shorter than had been seen and tended to expose their legs and knees. However, women started to fight for their right to vote and live in equal. So this time is so important and interesting for everyone to know it.

Formula 17 (2004)

Let’s talk about something different today.  All the movies that l have posed I this blog are very normal (TALKING ABOUT MEN & WOMEN RELATIONSHIP) but, today wee will change!!!

Gay movie is a topic for discussing!  Gay movie in this place does not mean that I will talk about pornography or something. It‘s just in baby level that can be showed in public.  For westerners, they may think about Brokeback Mountain which was very famous 5-6 Years ago.  However, Brokeback Mountain, for me, is to boring, boring, boring. The movie is very slow and so quiet.  And it also is too drama.  So, you are wrong if you expected me to talk about this movie.  Formula17 is the movie for todayyyy. 

Formula 17 is a gay romantic movie that talks about Chou T'ien-Tsai, a romantic Taiwanese male who live in outskirt and never fall in love.  I mean truly love.  He loves chatting with guys on the internet.  And one day he thinks he falls in love with a guy he net in chatting program. Then a trip for his love is begun.

And one day he thinks he falls in love with a guy he net in chatting program. Then a trip for his love is begun.  He decides to go to the city.  However, the gay he meets does not be like his imagination.  Then, his life in a big city has started after that.

Visiting his old friend in a pub, he met a man who everyone seems to think as a Casanova. And love story in different taste begin. 

Thos movie is different from other gay movies because it does not focus on sex and or always and with tragedy like it always be.  It is like other romantic comedy movie. It’s sweet and cute in the way that men can do. (I think it’s because the main characters are cute.) and I guarantee that it is not ewwwww like everyone think and always do when they see men-kissing shot. However, the weak point of this movie is the plot.  It seems too easy to guess what will happen next, but if you don’t think anything much, this movie will make you smile.

Jenny, Juno (2005)

When a poppy love is not just only being a poppy love, it becomes to be more than that.   

Jenny, Juno is a South Korean romantic film movie that focuses on a cute high school couple who get in a big trouble, pregnancy with no preparation, after having sex only one time.  When Jenny discovers that she is pregnant, she and his boyfriend, Juno, decide to keep the baby.  They try to hide this secret from families as long as they can. 

 

However, it is not easy when her belly gets bigger and bigger everyday.  Eventually, the truth is revealed.  Their parents found out and try to fix it,  and then what will happen, you should see it yourself. 

Soooo, the reason that make me love this film is that because of the charm of Juno for sure. But this is just only reason that makes me see it.  After I finished watching this movie I can tell that it has more than just the character, Juno, is good looking. This film is cute in the way of Korean. Both of their parents face with the shocking now from their kid so funny.  

 

Park Min-Ji and Kim Hye-Sung who are play as Jenny and Juno take this character so perfect.  They look so natual when they has to pretend to be a little parent.  Generally, this film does not have anything much, but if you want to watch something for relxing, Jenny, Juno will not make you feel disappointed.  

Kuan Meun Ho (2010)

 

 

Mostly, when people review movies that they like, few or even no one mention or say that they love Thai movies. However, I am Thai. It is hard to say that I have no fancy with Thai movies. Actually, Thai movie are always affected by trend in that time. For example, some year horror movie was very boom. Every director will cash the flow with that trend. So, Thai movie seems hard to find a good one that can reach a international standard. BUT, it does not mean there are none. There are some black sheep. 

One of them is “Kuan Meun Ho” or “Hello Stranger” in English.

Kuan Meun Ho is a Thai romantic comedy film. 

It talks about strangers who meet each other in strange situation. “He” and “she”, strangers who are not even know each other names, have to grasp hands together to travel in the country that Thai people seem to crazy about, Korea. Most people go to Korea in order to walk in the place that they use to see to Korean movies. But, they have different reason. They meet each other with accidental, but they come back together intentionally. And what happen next you have to see by yourself.

This film is different from other Thai comedy that most use Thai jokes that mostly only Thai understand. And the jokes that I mention are stupid joke that sometime when you grow enough you will not think they are fun any more.

 

However, Kuan Meun Ho become a popular movie in some others countries.  So, I think it can guarantee that this film will not be something too stupid.  Moreover, Aj. Lauraine also said that it is very good after she had a chance to watch it.

You will see great sceneries of Korea in many places. Another thing is that this is a love film that convey love story in different way that no one have ever do. Therefore, if you have time, I think you must see it.
