Formula 17 (2004)

Let’s talk about something different today.  All the movies that l have posed I this blog are very normal (TALKING ABOUT MEN & WOMEN RELATIONSHIP) but, today wee will change!!!

Gay movie is a topic for discussing!  Gay movie in this place does not mean that I will talk about pornography or something. It‘s just in baby level that can be showed in public.  For westerners, they may think about Brokeback Mountain which was very famous 5-6 Years ago.  However, Brokeback Mountain, for me, is to boring, boring, boring. The movie is very slow and so quiet.  And it also is too drama.  So, you are wrong if you expected me to talk about this movie.  Formula17 is the movie for todayyyy. 

Formula 17 is a gay romantic movie that talks about Chou T'ien-Tsai, a romantic Taiwanese male who live in outskirt and never fall in love.  I mean truly love.  He loves chatting with guys on the internet.  And one day he thinks he falls in love with a guy he net in chatting program. Then a trip for his love is begun.

Visiting his old friend in a pub, he met a man who everyone seems to think as a Casanova. And love story in different taste begin. 

Thos movie is different from other gay movies because it does not focus on sex and or always and with tragedy like it always be.  It is like other romantic comedy movie. It’s sweet and cute in the way that men can do. (I think it’s because the main characters are cute.) and I guarantee that it is not ewwwww like everyone think and always do when they see men-kissing shot. However, the weak point of this movie is the plot.  It seems too easy to guess what will happen next, but if you don’t think anything much, this movie will make you smile.

Jenny, Juno (2005)

When a poppy love is not just only being a poppy love, it becomes to be more than that.   

Jenny, Juno is a South Korean romantic film movie that focuses on a cute high school couple who get in a big trouble, pregnancy with no preparation, after having sex only one time.  When Jenny discovers that she is pregnant, she and his boyfriend, Juno, decide to keep the baby.  They try to hide this secret from families as long as they can. 

 

However, it is not easy when her belly gets bigger and bigger everyday.  Eventually, the truth is revealed.  Their parents found out and try to fix it,  and then what will happen, you should see it yourself. 

Soooo, the reason that make me love this film is that because of the charm of Juno for sure. But this is just only reason that makes me see it.  After I finished watching this movie I can tell that it has more than just the character, Juno, is good looking. This film is cute in the way of Korean. Both of their parents face with the shocking now from their kid so funny.  

 

Park Min-Ji and Kim Hye-Sung who are play as Jenny and Juno take this character so perfect.  They look so natual when they has to pretend to be a little parent.  Generally, this film does not have anything much, but if you want to watch something for relxing, Jenny, Juno will not make you feel disappointed.  

Kuan Meun Ho (2010)

 

 

Mostly, when people review movies that they like, few or even no one mention or say that they love Thai movies. However, I am Thai. It is hard to say that I have no fancy with Thai movies. Actually, Thai movie are always affected by trend in that time. For example, some year horror movie was very boom. Every director will cash the flow with that trend. So, Thai movie seems hard to find a good one that can reach a international standard. BUT, it does not mean there are none. There are some black sheep. 

One of them is “Kuan Meun Ho” or “Hello Stranger” in English.

Kuan Meun Ho is a Thai romantic comedy film. 

It talks about strangers who meet each other in strange situation. “He” and “she”, strangers who are not even know each other names, have to grasp hands together to travel in the country that Thai people seem to crazy about, Korea. Most people go to Korea in order to walk in the place that they use to see to Korean movies. But, they have different reason. They meet each other with accidental, but they come back together intentionally. And what happen next you have to see by yourself.

This film is different from other Thai comedy that most use Thai jokes that mostly only Thai understand. And the jokes that I mention are stupid joke that sometime when you grow enough you will not think they are fun any more.

 

However, Kuan Meun Ho become a popular movie in some others countries.  So, I think it can guarantee that this film will not be something too stupid.  Moreover, Aj. Lauraine also said that it is very good after she had a chance to watch it.

You will see great sceneries of Korea in many places. Another thing is that this is a love film that convey love story in different way that no one have ever do. Therefore, if you have time, I think you must see it.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006)

Some may bored with micicle and singing thing .  SO,let's change the mood to another thing which is not about dancing and singing.  Perfume:The Story of a Murderer is the movie that I will talk today.

This story is about Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a man who has a great talent of scent and his obsession.  The story begin in fish market, the stinkiest place France in 18^th century where Jean-Baptiste Grenouille born.  It may because of this; he seems to have the best nose which can smell everything even the smell of glass and copper which is something that no one has ever smelled.  

However, although he loves to sniff in everything, the most he prefer is that the odor of woman.  He obsess with this scent and tries to find the way to keep women’s odor.  After he learns how to make a perfume and to keep a scent, that is the beginning of the tragedy.  

This is a German film directed by Tom Tykwer.  The film was made on a budget of €50 million, making it one of the most expensive German films.  

For me, this film is perfect by using light and camera angle to convey emotion of this story.  Grenouille in this film is like a psycho in the way that he can not control his obsession toward women’s odor, and the director made us think like that by using light and the dark place.  Another example of light technique that was using is that the director use light to portray women’s beauty perfectly, even though the woman is only a female vender.   

In the film, most women who were the victim of Grenouille’s obsession are ordinary people.  Some are whore.  Some are hard working women.  Few of them are noble.  So, they do not clean and beauty.  However, the director can make them shine their beauty in their own ways.  Everyone looks beautiful in different way and these impress me a lot.

 Also, we will get some knowledge about perfume and the process of making perfume in the old time which I do not know it is different from nowadays or not.  But, it is very interesting. 

So, next weekend if you have nothing to do, I recommend you this film.

Save the Last Dance (2001)

Last night, I had a chance to watch Street Dance 3D that cable TV rerun it again.  And this sparks me to think about this kind of movie that seem to have more and more now.   Street Dance, Step Up, Honey and Save the Last Dance are all about dancing, and most of them were made in many episodes.  I think because people all round the world like to watch something that they can’t do.  It is like the case that American people like to see American idol or Thai like to see The star.   For me I love to see this kind of movie because I can’t do it and I obsess with women body.  So, when I watch it, I have hair standing on end with impression.  

However, with all the series of dancing films, there is the only one that can catch my feeling the most.   

It is SAVE THE LAST DANCE!!

 This story is about a white girl, Sara Johnson, who wants to be a ballerina, but her dream is suddenly stopped after her mother died.   Her life has change after that.  She has to move to her father’s house in a black neighborhood in the other side of the town.  She has to study in a new school in that area where she is one of few white students there.  The new environment makes her feel frustration.   

But Derek, a popular student with a passion for hip hop dancing who doesn’t let his trouble past oppress him from the brighten future, makes her life delight again.

Step up

This movie may not outstanding or striking about dancing.  I know why.  It is because the actors of this movie are difference than other movies in this field.   Julia Stiles who act as Sara Johnson is not a professional dancer like others which use professional dancers to be main characters.  It seems more natural, normal and reality.  So, it made a feeling of attempt to catch the dream like it happen in the real life.  

Step Up 2; The Streets

This scene that Sara goes to audition is a perfect scene.  Although Stiles is not a professional dancer, this scene deeply impresses many people including me.  With setting, light and song, all elements make it divisibly.

Hairspray(2007)

If we talk about musical, everyone will think about GLEE now.  BUT for me Glee has no interesting.  It is like other musical films, especially all episodes of High School Musical.  It mostly talks about teenagers’ love which is now very boring for me.  There is nothing new at all.  Glee is another musical TV series that so popular now.  My friends talk about it very often, but I do not see anything that can impress me.  In Glee, they only cover or remix other songs and that’s all.  So, if you want to see a musical movie that can give you more than just teenagers’ love story and songs with stupid steps, I recommend you this film HAIRSPRAY!!!!
 

 Hairspray is a story of Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teenager who has a talent of dancing.  She obsessed with the Corny Collins Show.  She and her best friend, Penny, dash home to watch the show every day after school. 

  

  After one of the stars of the show leaves, Corny Collins makes auditions to find who will be the next person on the Corny Collins show.  With the help of her friends, she can be part of the show.   

And because she is fat, she knows the feeling of the outsider of society that black people feel.  So, Tracy decides that it's not fair that the black kids can only dance on the Corny Collins Show once a month, and with the help of Seaweed, Link, Penny, Motormouth Maybelle, her father and Edna, she's going to integrate the show.

With all the summery that I give, you may not clearly understand what is the difference between others musicals films or TV series and Hairspray like what I say.   This movie is set in the city of Baltimore, Maryland on 1962.  In America in that period, racial discrimination still exists.  So, when we watch this move, we will learn some American history from it, and we will learn it with fun which is difference from others that focus only love or dancing.

Another thing that makes this film difference from others is the characterization of the main character, Tracy.  She is not a beautiful slim girl like most main characters in other films.  It shows that everyone is important even though you are fat.  Lots of part in the movie encourages overweight people to live with happiness.  So, it is COOL.

 

 

Personally, I like this movie because they cast many superstars to play in this movie.  

You will have a change to see John Travolta in form of a big woman, Edna Turnblad, Tracy's mother and agent who is shame of her obesity which is hard to see for sure.  Not only John Travolta, this movie gathers many famous Hollywood superstars such as Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, and Christopher Walken.  Queen Latifah shows her voice and acting in this movie extremely perfect (actually, I love her personally>_<).
